Intercityscape posters
In 1991 InterCity commissioned the renowned artist Brendan Neiland R.A. to paint a series of five works to celebrate the electricification of the East Coast Main Line and the full introduction of the full IC225 fleet.
Brendan Neiland‘s style of realism and cityscapes was ideal and the artist created spectacular paintings that cleverly portrayed aspects of station architecture together with the electrification and the trains
themselves in scenes at Kings Cross, Leeds, York, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
The following year advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi went on to produce the last series of TV commercials for InterCity, Welcome to InterCity. In the station scene the Saatchi’s creative team cleverly manages to create a moving image version of Brendan Neiland’s classic posters.

A further poster followed in 1993 with Brendan Neiland producing a painting of Bath Poultney Bridge to promote InterCity‘s 125 services on the Western Region main line.
Further examples of Brendan Neiland‘s cityscapes can be seen at the Redfern Gallery website

Monica
The eye catching See a friend this weekend leaflets used the same image with different rail journeys. This series used the famous Monica posters, the most widely recalled of any Rail posters.

The children's TV program Blue Peter ran a competition in conjunction with InterCity. Viewers were asked to send in paintings imagining how InterCity would be in the 21st century. Over 53,000 entries were received. The joint winners named an InterCity 125 power car Blue Peter II (see above) at Newcastle, followed by a ride in the cab all the way to Penzance.
Blue Peter presenter Mark Curry also opened the InterCity21 event at Bounds Green. |

The May 1987 edition of the passenger magazine InterCity devoted much space to the 21st anniversary. The front cover showed the 1960s motive power, the Deltic, and the current IC125. |

The new logo announced at the 21st anniversary and first used on the inaugural trip of the Master Cutler from Sheffield on May 6. |
