Relax 1989 (Agency: Saatchi & Saatchi)

1989 saw a significant change to InterCity‘s advertising strategy and the change of advertising agencies. Saatchi & Saatchi came up with a series of TV commercials highlighting the InterCity experience. ’Relax‘ depicts various slightly surreal scenes or ’InterCity moments‘. We see a George Bernard Shaw look-alike playing chess with his grandson, the Penguin on the cover of the paperback settling down for a snooze, the curling shoe heel, etc. The visual mood is complemented by the sound track by blues singer Leon Redbone.

The commercial won 13 awards including the ’Gold of Gold‘ from both the Design and Art Directors Association and Golden Breaks. It went on to spawn three more commercials - ’Sleepy Time‘, ’Untwist‘ and ’Relax More‘ featuring the same characters and tracks by Leon Redbone.
